I just used my new Leifheit cherry pitter to pit about 15 pounds of cherries freshly picked today. Overall, I'm glad I bought it.

In past years, I've used a plastic single cherry pitter. It works beautifully, but takes a long time *and* makes my hand very, very tired. My niece and I were looking for something that would be faster, easier, and less physically tiring.

Based on other reviews, I expected the pitter to leave some pits behind. That is absolutely true. If you want to work quickly, you can't stop and make sure each cherry pit is fully extracted, so I developed a process that worked OK. I ran a large bowl of cherries through the pitter, then stopped and used a shrimp deveiner to go back through each of the cherries to poke through the hold and make sure the pit was gone. In fact, almost all the pits left behind were like hanging chads... they were still attached to the cherry and easy to spot and remove. But a few were still left in the hole. I would rather take the time to remove them before freezing than after, and the shrimp deveiner was perfect for the task. As I poked, I transferred the cherries to another bowl.

I also used the shrimp deveiner to poke cherries out that got stuck in the pit removal area. That happened more frequently than I would like, and I couldn't tell that it was related to any feature of the cherry like size. Many times, just depressing the plunger again would release it, but if that didn't do the trick, it was easier to use the shrimp deveiner to remove it than to use my finger.

The pit reservoir held pits for 15 pounds easily. (Although if all the pits had been released into the reservoir, it would have needed to be emptied. :-))

The action of depressing the plunger was very, very easy and fast and much easier on my hand than the single cherry pitter.

It took me about 2.5 hours to do about 15 pounds.

I wish the pits would all be released. But I just looked at reviews for one of the $200+ metal pitters, and the reviews said the pits weren't all released by that one either. So, overall, I'm glad I bought this one, and glad I didn't spend $200+!

My niece and I picked 50 pounds each, so I still have a lot of cherries to pit and freeze. My niece gets to use the new pitter tomorrow, and I'm already looking forward to getting it back!
